- How long have you had an interest in art?
I've always had an interest in art since I was very little, but I
really got into it around the time I was 12. Around that time I was
really into a lot of video games since I grew up with an older
brother; that interest in games brought me to want to draw
characters that I liked, and lead to the idea of pursuing it as a
career choice.
- Where did you go to college and what is your favorite memory of school?
I went to Springfield Technical Community college my first 2 years,
and then I transferred to Elms College. I have a lot of fond
memories, but most of my favorite memories happened when we would
all get together as a group and have gaming and movie nights in our
computer lab till late hours of the night.
- What are your 3 top favorite table top games to play (non-electronic)
Mutants and Masterminds is really fun, and I also must admit I
really have a guilty pleasure for a good game of Uno; but my all
time favorite table top is definitely Dread.
- If you could have just one super power what would it be, and why?
If I had the choice to pick any super power I think I would have to
pick the power to Fix/heal anything and everything. I'm super clumsy
so I would never have to worry about breaking anything; plus if
someone was hurt I would be able to fix them up easily!
- Where is (or would be) your favorite place to vacation?
I'm gonna sound like a huge nerd here, but I would really love to go
to Japan. That dream might come true soon so fingers crossed!
- If you could meet any artist (past or present) who would it be and
what would you hope to learn from meeting them?
There's quite a few artists I would love to meet, but keeping it
down to 2 I would love to meet Tetsuya Nomura, and Hirohiko Araki.
Tetsuya Nomura is a concept designer for the video game company
Square Enix and has been involved in many games like Final Fantasy
and Kingdom hearts. He's one of the reasons I really got into art so
just meeting him would be amazing. Hirohiko Araki is an artist I've
gotten into more recently; he is the creator of the manga Jojo's
Bizarre Adventure. Though the series is as bizarre as it's title,
his artwork is breathtaking and very colorful, and I just can't get
enough of his characters; I would love to sit down and discuss with
him how he comes up with all of his crazy ideas.
- What is the process you go through to create a Pie Rat character?
Well first, when I have been given a character that I need to
design; I need to come up with the concept first. (Sometimes I do
some research beforehand, for example clothing.) So I start off with
a rough sketch of the character, and that is usually my base. This
is all done in a program called Paint Tool SAI, and I use a Wacom
Intuos 4 pen and tablet to create the sketch. After I am done with
the sketch, I move it into another program called Adobe Illustrator.
This is where I create the final product, which involves using a
tool called the Pen tool. This tool allows me to create the complex
vector graphics you see on the cards.
- How did you end up working with the Wild East Game Company?
I met the owners of Wild East Game Company while I was at the PAX
East convention in Boston MA. I was introduced through my professor
from Elms college, and I just happened to have my portfolio with me.
I have been happy to be a part of the team ever since.
- If you could go back in time and visit yourself when you were 10 what
advice would you give yourself?
I think if I could go back and give myself some advice, it would
probably be don't doubt yourself or look at your work negatively,
but always strive to better yourself. I feel like a lot of younger
artists get pressured and sometimes give up because of the
competition. But if it's something you love you should just do it
and have fun. I had a hard time grasping that idea when I was
younger.
- Are there any lesser-known cool facts about you that you might like
to share with us? (if yes, please share)
here are some silly facts about me:
- I absolutely love to cosplay.
- I collect anime/video game figures; I currently own 54.
- I can play Guitar Hero and DDR on Expert.
- Sailor moon was my favorite show when I was little, and still is one of my personal favorites
